LS 482 Athena Lemnia of Phidias h. cm. 160
In our collection of classical statues there is the statue of Athena Lemnia made of antique patinated white resin, suitable only for indoor placement.
The sculpture of Athena was commissioned to Phidias by the Athenian colonizers who arrived on the island of Lemnos, from which the name “Lemnia” derives. It was originally placed on a pedestal on the acropolis of Athens and served to ensure the protection of the goddess for the inhabitants. In this work, Athena does not have the symbols of war with her, but is depicted with her head uncovered and wearing a peplos, the Greek women's woolen dress, long to the feet and tightened at the waist by a belt of coiled snakes. On her shoulder she has the aegis, the goatskin with Medusa's head on it, tied as a shoulder strap. In addition to being the goddess of war, Athena is a symbol of thought and wisdom.
